Post Re: Ed's truck upgrades and repairs
Used the truck to run errands today, everything seems good. I put a gallon and a half of gear oil in it, same as I did before. Also worked on the brakes. Had to back off on the rear adjustment a little, they were dragging.

Glad to hear the rear diff is back together, almost summer wheeling season!

It’s spring wheeling season, just got back from Calico.

Post Re: Ed's truck upgrades and repairs
My truck is currently down, the 4 speed input broke, half the teeth stripped off the gear. I had a shop modify two shafts, so I would have a spare this time. They went in too tight, I was incorrectly advised that it would be okay. During the installation the 5 speed mainshaft was pushed forward, jamming up the 5 speed. I dropped it and a buddy helped take it apart, then he machined a groove in the mainshaft for a snap ring. He has a lathe. This is to keep the shaft from moving forward in the bearing again. There was no groove in the stock application, because the yoke and nut kept it in place. The shop reworked the 4 speed input shaft to fit into the mainshaft.

Now the last thing that got done, I opened up the thru bore in the adapter plate to clear the snap ring. It’s the first boring job I’ve done with the new mill, I only bought a boring head a few weeks ago in anticipation. Then bought a toe clamping set a week ago. I didn’t have a left hand boring bar, so had to run the spindle backwards. This meant feeding by hand, because the feed was going the wrong way. I already found left hand boring bars on eBay. In this boring head you can also stick the boring bar straight down, but this head is too small to do it that way with this diameter bore. Also there’s something I didn’t get pictures of, the boring head doesn’t go small enough to start at the beginning hole size. So I plunged with an end mill all the way around, to a scribed line. Then cleaned it up with the boring bar.

This is for your dual tranny? The four speed is behind the 5, correct?

Got the 5 speed completely back together today, probably the 4 speed tomorrow. Then put them in.

I changed the rear winch from 1/4” shear pin to 5/16” shear pin today. I made two pins with cotter pins on either end.
