just curious, how much does a kit like that run? main reason I ask is because the u-joints in a closed knuckle 70 are about the same size as a dana 44. If that kit is in the $1000 range it may be worth considering swapping to an open knuckle dana 60 or something. Of course you may not have issues with strength. My brother had a J-3000 pickup and thought his 70 front was awesome till we broke the shafts and realized they were pretty small.

I think the kit is listed at $595, it's in the link. That doesn't include calipers and pads. The u joints are 1480, same as a modern Dana 60. I have 1-1/2" 35 spline chromoly axles all the way across too. The stock outers were 1-3/8", so this meant finding new locking hubs with the right spline (and one spare). The thing is already pretty modified, I'm just gonna add to it. It has an ARB, custom made high steer arm (and a spare), wheel studs instead of bolts holding the spindles on, and knuckles swapped left to right to allow tie rod in the front instead of the back. It was also modified to eliminate the two bolts going thru the u bolt pate and into the axle housing, a hole was put into the web so a u bolt could be used instead.

that sounds much better than the dana 70 my brother had. His joints were same size if not smaller than a 760x that the 44's use. I guess like all things there are good and bad versions. Your axle sounds pretty well put together. $600 for the kit seems like a pretty decent price.

I toughened it up where I could, I think it's a shame to see modern axles under vintage rigs. Especially when starting out with something as beefy as this.

I thought the kit would be more, not a bad price.

The big project payed off, I didn't win last year because I didn't feel like filling out a modifications list. This year I did it well in advance and emailed it in.

Thanks. I didn't expect Best In Show at all. It's a trail rig, not a show rig. They said it was all about the points I got from the things I did to it.

I'm sure that's a group that appreciates seeing an IH motor in there!

Thanks. I certainly put a lot of work into it.
