I suppose. Last time, as you'll recall, we had a LONG first day, from home all the way to Buck which is about half of the trail. The nice thing of course was it set us up for a very casual day after, which I really enjoyed. I'd love to spend a day luxuriating at the springs. There's always a certain element of winging it with these things, though.

Nice, Scott! My ARB has been a game changer. It's hard to imagine wheeling without it now that I have it.

Don’t know if you bought it, but dual band I’d say is a minimum for ham on the con because the spider repeater and the public repeaters are in different bands.

Ham purists will tell that boafang (and all of the other rebranded Chinese radios) have cheap crystals that make the transmission bleed over into nearby bands. That said, I think by looking at rugged radio and PCI, they resell them too. They’re reliable and the public as spoken that price is more important than bandwidth conservation. All that said, personally the link you gave for a cheap Chinese radio, looks too expensive to me. :-P

i like rugged radio as a company a lot... that being said they are overpriced and have bad reviews. I don't nothing about radios but my baofang works great

My 2 cents

go cheap with a baefong or similar.

Or

Go all the way with a reputable name in the space like Yaeusu, Kenwood and so on.

I say get the inexpensive UV-5R model if you're just looking for communications between vehicles and something that is way better than CB. Ive used mine for 2-3 years now and works great. Anytime someone steps out of the vehicle and is walking, when someone else doesnt have a radio, as a backup for my vhf radio, etc. They are super common and have different accessories, mounts, etc on amazon. I run a 50w radio in the 4runner and the baofeng to carry in my hip when out of the vehicle. Like Justin said, ham guys will just say spend the $ and go big to do all the fancy communications stuff (hitting repeaters, emergency, etc). I say in the long run do both, have the 5V to have on trip and thing HAM for permanent vehicle installation.
My also recommend PCI as company for racing applications, for the weekend guy a good radio thru amazon will do. I will say that PCI customer service is great.

SO how are those Rigs coming along? Got a few things to take care of this weekend myself, smog check is due so.
1. Cap and Rotor
2. Air Filter
3. Smog test
4. clean out from last trip and reload tools and equipment.
5. Prep trailer
6. swap "off-road" Y-pipe back on if there is time.

Won't have much time after this weekend, so it gotta get done now.

BTW I didn't jump on the HAM bandwagon yet, so I'm still old school CB.

We'll just yell at you to communicate. Lol

My truck is 90% done reassembly after paint. Still need to do good pins, anti wrap bar, front blinkers, pack and mount spare tire carrier. Really not too bad.

I also bought a knock off arb fridge... we'll see if it was a good buy or not

What's the brand? There's like two pricing options for fridges - spendy and expensive.

Woo-Hoo it's a "trail fridge shoot out" oh wait I think it may need a clever acronym name.
